Wind & time selection

Focus every analysis view on the sailing interval you mean to compare, then set and check the wind direction.

Know what the controls affect

The Time & Wind controls apply to the open fleet. The time range is the interval between Start and End. It is different from the current cursor, a selected Library row, and filters: changing the range focuses analysis on a period, while filters decide which samples within the analysis can qualify.

1. Set the time range

1. Open the Time & Wind controls. 2. Drag the Start or End handle to bracket the period. 3. Read the displayed Start, Duration, and End. 4. Release the handle, then wait for the views to update. 5. Use the controls in Track, Graph, and Table to check that the intended interval is now in view.

  • Use Lock time range when you want to move the existing span without changing its duration.
  • Use Zoom time into selection to inspect the selected span more closely.
  • Use Zoom time out to restore a wider context.
  • Choose Leg to focus a particular leg when legs have been identified; choosing all legs removes that leg restriction.

2. Set and check the wind

1. Set the wind direction in degrees using the Wind control. 2. Use the minus and plus controls for one-degree adjustments where available. 3. If SWD is offered, apply it only after comparing the suggestion with the course and sailing direction. 4. Check the result on Track and in wind-based analysis before treating VMG or upwind/downwind labels as final.

SWD means suggested wind direction. It is a starting point, not a confirmation that the direction is correct for this race. A change in the bearing-display setting can change how a direction is presented; keep the display reference in mind when comparing notes.

3. Use the range as a race-cut reference

For manual race cutting, move Start close to the intended gun and End into the finishing period before opening Cut Race. These are reference times for the cutter; the selected End is not proof that every boat finishes at that exact instant. Check the resulting race logs separately.

If the result is confusing

  • The range looks too narrow: use Zoom time out, then move one handle at a time.
  • The range will not move as expected: unlock the time range before changing its span.
  • A wind-based result looks wrong: compare SWD and manual wind direction against Track, then confirm the bearing reference.
  • A leg view excludes data you need: return to all legs before adjusting the time range.
  • The controls are hidden: expand Time & Wind; hiding the dock does not reset the selection.
